Where to stay in Tokyo by metro station

Tokyo rewards precise station choices. Neighbouring stations can offer very different line combinations and local surroundings, so a metro-centred view is often more useful than treating an entire ward as one travel base.

Hotel counts are the properties in Near Metro's comparison for each station. "Nearest hotel" uses the routed walking distance when one has been measured and the labelled straight-line distance otherwise. Ratings are guest scores out of 10 from the hotel data provider.

Shinjuku First visit

Marunouchi + Shinjuku + Ōedo

A first visit built around the biggest interchange

Shinjuku layers three subway lines on top of the JR hub, so most day trips start without a transfer. The west side is office towers and large hotels; the east side is Kabukicho and the department stores.

Trade-off: The station complex is enormous, and a hotel labelled Shinjuku can still be a long underground walk from the platform you need. Compare Ikebukuro for lower prices on the same north-west corridor.

Tokyo Station

Marunouchi

Shinkansen day trips and the Imperial Palace side of the city

Tokyo Station is the Shinkansen gateway and sits beside Marunouchi and the palace gardens. Otemachi's five subway lines are a short underground walk away, which widens the choice of direct trips.

Trade-off: Only the Marunouchi subway line stops here, and the district is quiet after office hours. Hotels around the station are among the most expensive in the city.

Ginza First visit

Ginza + Hibiya + Marunouchi

A central, walkable base with three subway lines

Ginza connects the Ginza, Hibiya and Marunouchi lines, and Tokyo Station, Hibiya Park and Tsukiji are on foot. It is the most central area in this list for repeated short trips.

Trade-off: Rooms are priced for the district. Late evenings are quieter than Shinjuku or Shibuya, which some travellers prefer and others find flat.

  • median rating 8.6/10

Closest: MUJI HOTEL GINZA (178 m) , Hyatt Centric Ginza Tokyo (216 m) , The Gate Hotel Tokyo by Hulic (239 m)

Ueno First visit

Ginza + Hibiya

Narita arrivals, museums and lower room rates

Keisei trains from Narita end at Ueno, and the park, zoo and national museums are beside the station. The Ginza and Hibiya lines run straight to Ginza, Asakusa and Roppongi.

Trade-off: Ueno is on the north-east side, so Shinjuku and Shibuya take longer. Hotel quality varies widely around Ameyoko; read the room details, not just the price.

Asakusa

Ginza + Asakusa

Direct airport trains and the old-town side of Tokyo

The Toei Asakusa Line carries through-services from both Haneda and Narita, and Senso-ji, the Sumida river and Tokyo Skytree are walkable. Hotels here are often cheaper than the west side.

Trade-off: It is the far east of the subway map: Shinjuku and Shibuya are 30 minutes or more each way. Evenings close early around the temple.

Closest: Hostel Chapter Two Tokyo (67 m) , BANRAI HOTEL (87 m) , Hotel Wing International Select Asakusa Komagata (106 m)

Shibuya

Ginza + Hanzōmon + Fukutoshin

Nightlife, the crossing and the south-west neighbourhoods

Shibuya is the terminus of the Ginza Line and a Hanzōmon and Fukutoshin interchange, with JR and private railways for Yokohama and the west. Harajuku and Omotesando are a short walk or one stop away.

Trade-off: Rooms are expensive and the station has been under reconstruction for years, so walking routes change. Families often find it louder than Ueno or Ginza.

  • nearest 160 m (2 min walk)

Closest: Shibuya Tokyu REI Hotel (160 m) , Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu (226 m) , SHIBUYA STREAM HOTEL (352 m)

Ikebukuro

Marunouchi + Yūrakuchō + Fukutoshin

Mid-price rooms on a major hub

Ikebukuro combines three subway lines with a JR and private-railway hub, and typically prices below Shinjuku. Sunshine City and the Seibu and Tobu department stores are at the station.

Trade-off: It is a transit hub more than a sightseeing area, and the east and west exits feel like different towns. Ginza and Asakusa need a transfer or a longer ride.

Before you book

Choose for repeat journeys rather than fame alone. Compare line access, transfer count, and the places immediately around each station before deciding which area best fits the trip.

Check your arrival, not just your daytime trips

Haneda connects to the Toei Asakusa Line through Keikyu services, which makes Asakusa and Higashi-Ginza direct arrivals. Narita's Keisei services run to Ueno and Nippori, and the Narita Express reaches Tokyo and Shinjuku stations. Check the operator's current timetable for the last connecting service before choosing a late-night arrival base.

Questions travellers ask

  • Where should I stay in Tokyo for a first visit?

Start with Shinjuku, Ginza and Ueno. Shinjuku, Ginza and Ueno give a first visit three different starting points: the busiest interchange, the most walkable central district, and the easiest Narita arrival with cheaper rooms.

  • Which recommended area has the most listed hotels near the station?

Shinjuku currently has 40 hotels in Near Metro's comparison, the most of the recommended areas, with the nearest a 1-minute routed walk (0 m) from the station. Counts change with each data refresh.

  • How does Near Metro measure the walk from a hotel to the metro station?

Where a routed pedestrian path has been computed, the guide shows that distance and time. Otherwise it shows the straight-line distance from the station coordinate, labelled as such. Hotel counts come from the current LiteAPI inventory within the comparison radius and are refreshed on a schedule, not live.

Line connections reviewed 15 October 2026. The areas above are itinerary-based suggestions, not hotel-price or quality rankings; hotel figures are measured from the current inventory and change with each refresh. Sources: Tokyo Metro. Toei Subway.
