Penn Station vs Grand Central: where to stay in New York

Two New York station areas side by side: subway lines, the hotels listed near each station, the nearest measured walk and guest ratings, with a reviewed verdict.

The short answer

These are two different railroads as much as two neighbourhoods. Penn Station is the Amtrak, LIRR and NJ Transit hub, which also makes it the rail route from Newark Airport, and subway lines on Seventh and Eighth avenues stop above it. Grand Central is the Metro-North terminal for the Hudson Valley and Connecticut, with the 4, 5, 6 and 7 trains and the Shuttle across to Times Square. If your trip starts or ends on one of those trains, stay near the station it uses. Otherwise choose on character. The blocks around Penn Station are busy and commercial, and event nights at Madison Square Garden fill the streets. East Midtown around Grand Central is quieter at night but empties after office hours, and most hotels are business-oriented. Penn Station suits West Side plans and Herald Square shopping; Grand Central suits the East Side, the Chrysler Building and Fifth Avenue. Check which avenue a hotel is actually nearest.

Hotel counts are the properties in Near Metro's comparison for each station, up to 40; "40+" means at least that many. "Nearest hotel" uses the routed walking distance when one has been measured and the straight-line distance otherwise. Ratings are guest scores out of 10 from the hotel data provider.

What each area is like

Penn Station

Subway at 34th Street with Amtrak, LIRR and NJ Transit

Train arrivals, Madison Square Garden and Newark Airport

Penn Station is the Amtrak, LIRR and NJ Transit hub, which also makes it the rail route from Newark Airport. Subway lines on Seventh and Eighth avenues stop above it, and the Hudson Yards extension of the 7 train is a short walk.

Trade-off: The blocks around the station are busy and commercial rather than charming, and event nights at the Garden fill the streets.

Before you book: Check whether the hotel is on the Seventh or Eighth Avenue side; both are called Penn Station but serve different subway lines.

Grand Central

4, 5, 6, 7 and the Shuttle

East Midtown, Metro-North and quieter nights

Grand Central brings the Lexington Avenue lines, the 7 train and the Shuttle together with Metro-North to the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. The Chrysler Building and Fifth Avenue are on foot.

Trade-off: East Midtown empties after office hours and most hotels are business-oriented. The West Side needs the Shuttle or a walk.

Before you book: Hotels along Lexington and Park avenues may be closer to 51st Street than to Grand Central; compare the measured distances.
